Summary

We are looking for local history volunteers to help at King's Lynn Library. Times of the sessions are flexible and can be discussed with the library manager.

Detailed description

King’s Lynn Library is seeking a group of Local History volunteers to help with maintaining and improving our extensive local archives. King's Lynn library will be moving to a new premises in Autumn 2025. In the lead up to this move we are looking for volunteers who can work alongside staff to organise and box up materials ready for transporting to the new site.

You would be responsible for helping with the archives on a regular basis, usually weekly. The library hold a large range of paper archival materials including indexes and obituaries, amongst other things. Volunteers will need an appreciation of the age of some of the materials they will be working with. Full guidance will be provided and the team at King’s Lynn Library would be on hand to assist at all times. Staff will be taking on larger tasks and some indexing work but due to the quantity of materials we will need volunteer support for manual tasks such as boxing materials.

IT skills would be useful if you were to work on part of the project that required creating indexes of materials.

Volunteers should have:

  • An interest in local history and the history of West Norfolk
  • Light project management skills and a methodical approach to tasks
  • An interest in supporting the library in it's move to new premises

Volunteers will have a unique chance to support in the development and relocation of the archive and will gain insight into the materials held within the archive and their significance to the history of King's Lynn.
