Young volunteers

Volunteering is a great way to learn and develop new skills, gain experience for future employment and 'give back' to an organisation that has previously offered you support. It's also a great way to get to know and help your local community.

Why volunteer?

Rosie's story

Rosie volunteers with the NCH&C NHS Trust in the Stroke Rehabilitation Ward in Norwich. In the video on the right she explains why she would recommend volunteering to a friend. She was 16 at the time of recording, but she feels that volunteering has given her confidence that she can draw on in all areas of life.

Flourish Youth Awards for Volunteering and Participation.

What are they and who are they for?

What is Flourish?

Norfolk's shared ambition for all children and young people. Inspired by the things children and young people said were important to them.

  • Family and friends
  • Access to learning
  • The opportunity to lead a good life
  • Being understood
  • Building resilience
  • Respect for their individuality
  • Feeling safe
  • Being healthy

The awards recognises young people's volunteering and participation and the impact it has on their community as well as on their own personal development.

The awards are open to any 11-25 year olds in Norfolk who are involved in a volunteering or participation project.

How do I achieve the award?

  • Check the organisation you support is running the award, if they're not you could suggest it to them.
  • Set your goal! This will be achieved through your volunteering or participation and be linked to one of the FLOURISH letters.
  • Participate or volunteer for at least 5 hours related to your goal with support from your organisation and receive your award!!

Student Volunteer Week

Student Volunteering Week is a time to celebrate the impact that students have on their communities and to inspire more young people to get involved. Whether it’s helping out at a local charity shop, mentoring younger students, or supporting environmental projects, volunteering offers students the chance to make a real difference while gaining valuable skills and experiences. In this post, we’ll highlight some of the top reasons to volunteer—from enhancing your CV to making new connections and finding a sense of purpose. Plus, we’ll share exciting opportunities you can apply for to kick-start your own volunteering journey. Reasons to volunteer as a student: Enhance Your Employability – Volunteering equips you with valuable experience to add to your CV while helping you develop essential skills like time management, communication, and leadership. It can also provide hands-on experience in your chosen field, giving you an edge in the job market. Boost Your Wellbeing – Taking part in volunteer work offers a refreshing break from academic pressures, providing a sense of purpose and fulfilment. It can reduce stress, improve self-confidence, and contribute to better mental well-being. Support a Cause You Care About – Whether it’s a cause close to your heart due to personal experience or a wider issue like climate change, volunteering allows you to make a meaningful impact on something you’re passionate about. Connect with Your Community – If you’re living away from home for the first time, volunteering can help you step outside the student bubble, build local connections, and gain a deeper understanding of the community around you. Meet New People – Volunteering introduces you to a diverse range of people you might not otherwise meet. It’s also a great way to bond with fellow students who share your interests and values. Young people and volunteering survey

To inform the direction of their work, Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care System would like to hear from young people with and without previous experience of volunteering. This will enable them to identify areas of priority from the point of view the people they will be looking to attract. Following the survey, it is anticipated that they will run a short series of focus groups with young people to further explore the priorities they raise through the survey. To help them reach as many young people as possible in Norfolk and Waveney we appreciate you sharing the survey with your networks. The survey is for young people aged between 16-24 and can be accessed here https://forms.office.com/r/P3pN7ei58S or by the QR code below. It will be open until the 28 th February.
