Summary

We are seeking people to help research the history of famous Ice House and the fishing, railway and associated social and oral history associated with it

Detailed description

The Ice House is a Grade II listed building of brick construction with a thatched roof, once one of a pair, and now the only one of its kind left in the country. Out There have a vision and also significant funding to transform it into a National Centre for Outdoor Arts and Circus.

As part of the project and before major works start, Out There will be researching the history of the building and the fishing, railway and associated social and oral history associated with it. This is a truly exciting opportunity for someone who loves history and talking to people from different backgrounds. It's also an incredible opportunity to learn new skills and gain experience.

The Oral History Fieldworker will

  • Attend oral history gathering training
  • Learn interview techniques
  • Understand requirements around permissions and consents, completing paperwork
  • Learn how to use a recording device and upload the material onto an editing application
  • Record interviews with local people on their memories around The Ice House
  • Become aware of safeguarding and ethical issues
  • Learn how to transcribe and catalogue interviews

As you can see, you'll get training and loads of support, so this will not only be a really interesting opportunity, but the experience and skills gained, could be incredibly useful.

About Cultural Connections Volunteering

Cultural Connections is a NEW project promoting volunteering in the arts, heritage and cultural sector. We've just added a few events and activities but there are plenty more to come!!!

It's an easy and fun way to get into volunteering for residents of Great Yarmouth and East Suffolk. You can volunteer at exciting arts, heritage and cultural events and activities, including festivals. Volunteer as little or as much as you like and choose the kind of volunteering that works for you, including online volunteering . If you’ve never volunteered before, or you think it might be difficult for you, we’ll support you every step of the way. You'll meet new people, learn new skills, build confidence, and even earn rewards.
