Summary

Heritage Guides will be learning about the history of Ice House and guiding members of the public around this famous Great Yarmouth landmark

Detailed description

The Ice House is a Grade II listed building of brick construction with a thatched roof, once one of a pair, and now the only one of its kind left in the country. It's history is intertwined with the borough, its fishing industry and the railway. Out There have a vision and also significant funding to transform it into a National Centre for Outdoor Arts and Circus.

As part of the project and before major works start, Out There Arts will be researching the history of the building and educating local people about this historic community asset. This is a truly exciting opportunity for someone who loves history and talking to people from different backgrounds. It's also an incredible opportunity to learn new skills and gain experience.

The Heritage Guide will:

  • Attend supported sessions with partner organisations to learn about a variety of research tools and topics around The Ice House with Gt Yarmouth Library, Time and Tide Museum, Norfolk Record Office
  • Attend heritage and presentation training with local historian
  • Learn about the heritage of The Ice House and public speaking techniques
  • Attend training on interpretation assets
  • Host heritage tours and talks at Heritage Open Days and organised school/college/group visits

As you can see, you'll get training and loads of support, so this will not only be a really interesting opportunity, but the experience and skills gained, could be incredibly useful.

Cultural Connections is a NEW project promoting volunteering in the arts, heritage and cultural sector. We've just added a few events and activities but there are plenty more to come!!!

It's an easy and fun way to get into volunteering for residents of Great Yarmouth and East Suffolk. You can volunteer at exciting arts, heritage and cultural events and activities, including festivals. Volunteer as little or as much as you like and choose the kind of volunteering that works for you, including online volunteering . If you’ve never volunteered before, or you think it might be difficult for you, we’ll support you every step of the way. You'll meet new people, learn new skills, build confidence, and even earn rewards.
