Summary

We're looking for volunteers to help facilitate record listening parties in King's Lynn Library, helping others to listen to an album and then discuss it.

Detailed description

Norfolk Libraries working with Reel Connections are looking to appoint volunteers to work with us to run “Listening Parties” in several libraries in the county (Kings Lynn Library, Mile Cross Library and Tuckswood Library initially)

Listening Parties are sessions where people get together to listen to a classic rock/pop album all the way through using associated memorabilia to then enjoy a facilitated discussion. Inspired by the growth of album listening clubs such as ‘Classic Album Sundays’, Listening Parties are similar to how book and film clubs operate, except of course that it in this case it revolves (pun intended) around close listening and escaping the tyranny of the shuffle button.

Album choices are suggested and agreed ahead of each meeting and then each session we’ll gather to enjoy and discuss a classic album played in full, on vinyl, with minimal distractions.

Volunteer duties will include:

  • Preparing the album and memorabilia for the forthcoming session
  • Helping to set up the area and hi-fi equipment in the library.
  • Welcoming people to the sessions
  • Using the equipment (guidance provided) to play the album
  • Supporting the discussion with materials provided
  • Helping the group decide the album for the next session

A suitable volunteer for this role would be:

Someone with an interest in music and music history.

Someone who enjoys listening to other people’s views and feels able to support a discussion so everyone gets an opportunity to speak if they would like to.

Volunteers will be given full training ahead of the sessions.

Listening parties are being run in Norfolk Libraries thanks to funding from the Norfolk Community Foundation and Norwich Charitable Trusts.
