Summary

Aftercare Support Volunteers help clients at home to remove compression socks, wash and dry the legs, apply emollient cream and then re-apply the socks.

Detailed description

Clients who have recently healed from leg ulcers will often need to wear compression socks for an extended period of time following healing to prevent the recurrence of further ulcers. Clients are encouraged to maintain good hygiene of the leg and foot by regularly removing their compression socks, washing their legs and applying moisturising cream before then re-applying the compression socks. Some clients will need assistance with this process and in the absence of family support, may struggle to carry out this maintenance themselves, resulting in ulcers re-occurring.

Aftercare Support Volunteers help clients to remove compression socks, wash and dry the legs, apply emollient cream and then re-apply the socks. Volunteers will provide this support to clients in their homes on a weekly basis for a fixed period (6-8 weeks). By supporting these patients, we are reducing the likelihood of readmittance to medical services, easing NHS pressure.
