About Schoolreaders

Schoolreaders is a charity that finds volunteers and matches them to primary schools where they give free one-to-one reading sessions. Our aim is to make sure that every child can read well by the time they move to secondary school at the age of 11. Our volunteers currently listen to 12,500 children read every week across England. If you have some spare time during the school day, a good grasp of English, are able to commit to a school for at least one year and if you enjoy spending time with children, you could become a Schoolreaders volunteer. We do not ask for any particular educational qualifications. Our volunteers are drawn from all walks of life, and range in age from 18 to 92. Our volunteers get enormous pleasure from seeing the difference that a few hours of their time can make to a child's reading ability, confidence and enjoyment.
